Info | Gerry Byrne is currently serving his fourth consecutive mandate as the MP for Humber—St. Barbe—Baie Verte. Mr. Byrne is the Associate Critic for Competitiveness and the New Economy.
Mr. Byrne was first elected in a by-election in 1996 and, since then, his constituents have re-confirmed their support of his leadership in the general elections of 1997, 2000, 2004 and 2006. Over the course of his career, he has served on an impressive number of legislative committees of the House including Fisheries, Industry, Transport and Health.
In 2002, he became the 12th youngest MP in the history of Canada to be asked to serve in the federal cabinet. As the Minister of State responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), he gained widespread respect for his support of Newfoundland and Labrador and of Atlantic Canadian interests.
From 1997 to 1999, Mr. Byrne served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources and, more recently, has taken up special duties within the national health portfolio. Serving as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health, and having been given special responsibilities related to the medicinal drug approval process, he has taken on some incredibly important work.
Mr. Byrne lives where he was born and where he grew up, in Humber—St. Barbe—Baie Verte, with his wife Denise and their two-year-old son, little Gerry.
