| Info | Gayle Conelly Manchin was appointed to the state Board of Education in March 2007 to serve a nine-year term ending in 2015.
She attended West Virginia University, where she attained her bachelor's in language arts and education and a master's in reading. She also holds a second master's specialization in educational technology leadership from Salem International University.
Manchin, a native of Raleigh County, taught in Marion County schools and at Fairmont State University. She also was the director of the college's first Community Service Learning Program. While living in Marion County, she was active in her children's activities, the United Way, the Soup Opera, Quota and Junior League.
After moving to Charleston in 2001, Manchin became the state director of the AmeriCorps Promise Fellow Program, which served 20 counties. At the Office of Secretary of Education and the Arts, she implemented the WV PASS (West Virginia Partnerships to Assure Student Success) initiative. She continues to work closely with national consultant and poverty expert Ruby Payne.
She also serves on the West Virginia Commission for National and Community Service; chairs the Governor's Healthy Lifestyles Coalition and the Citizens' Advisory Council for the Governor's Cabinet on Children and Families; and co-chairs the Governor's 21st Century Jobs Cabinet. She is a partner on the West Virginia Partnership to Promote Community Well Being Commission, serves as the nominating chairwoman of The Education Alliance, is a member of the Black Diamond Girl Scout Council and is a past president of the Vandalia Rotary Club of Charleston.
Mrs. Manchin and Gov. Joe Manchin have three children and six grandchildren.
