InfoThe Hon. Rev. Ronald G. Thwaites, BA, MA, JP, MP, is the present Minister of Education.

Rev. Thwaites has held many positions in Jamaica’s private and public sector as well as academia for several decades.

He is an attorney-at-law by profession and has been a partner at the law firm Daly, Thwaites and Company since 1979. He has also worked in the media as a radio talk show host since 1976.

Additionally, Rev. Thwaites wears the hats of farmer, hotelier, company director, and minister of religion at the St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Gordon Town, St. Andrew.

Minister Thwaites has played an active role in the education system as he was on staff at his Alma mater, St. George’s College and St. Andrew High School between 1962 and 1963. He was also a Research Fellow in the Faculty of Law between 1970 and 1971 and a part-time lecturer in the Department of Social Work at the University of the West Indies.

As a student, he was awarded the Jamaica Scholarship to Cornell University and later the Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University.

Minister Thwaites has been credited with the establishment of the Jamaica Legal Aid Clinic in 1972. The clinic provides legal representation for thousands of nationals in Jamaica and the Diaspora. He was also the clinic’s Managing Director.

Rev. Thwaites entered representational politics in 1997 as the elected Member of Parliament for Central Kingston and held the constituency until 2002 and again in 2007.

In May 2011 he was named the Opposition Spokesperson on Education and was appointed Minister of Education in January 2012.

In the political sphere, Minister Thwaites is the Chairman of the People’s National Party’s Human Rights Commission.
