InfoBill Thiebaut is an extremely popular state senator from Pueblo, Colorado. He was first elected to the Colorado House of Representatives in 1986. He was appointed to fill a vacancy in the Senate in 1993, elected outright in 1994 , and reelected in 1998. His leadership qualities and commitment are demonstrated by his long tenure as Assistant Minority Leader and his election by his caucus as Majority Leader after Democrats gained control, with his help, of the Colorado Senate for the first time in 40 years.
Thiebaut is an attorney and he and his wife , Mary Ann , are the parents of 15 children. When he was elected Majority Leader and became the head of an 18-seat majority, he noted that it was nice to finally serve in a chamber that had more Democrats than he had children.

Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1947, he moved as a small child with his family to Pueblo where he was raised. He met his wife, Mary Ann, while he was a high school student attending the Abbey School in Canon City, and she was at the corresponding Catholic girls' high school , St. Scholastica. Thiebaut and his family really do represent what family values are all about. The Thiebaut children are all high achievers and are the kind of children we would all be proud of --- a testament to the caring parenting of Bill and Mary Ann. Their children have put themselves through college with work and the use of merit scholarships; they have participated in the Peace Corps; they have played professional sports and coached; and, they have committed themselves to public service--in fact, four daughters are public school teachers. And thoughout their lives, the older children have always helped out the younger children.

Thiebaut's strong sense of family extends to his commitment to his community, which is part of the source of his popularity and strong political support. He speaks about community as an ideal of the extended family; after all, a community, like a large extended family, may have diverse opinions and disagreements, but in the end, a community must pull together for the common good.

Thiebaut is also known as southern Colorado's "regional" Senator. Whether it is issues of constituent services, water, regional transportation (particularly rural air-service and prioritizing rural roads and highways) jobs, or capital construction projects, Thiebaut has been a successful advocate for the entire southern part of the state and a champion of issues impacting people in the area.

When residents of the San Luis Valley needed help getting a turn lane on Highway 160 so that school buses turning into a school parking lot and across oncoming traffic could do so safely and without risking the lives of the children on board, they turned to Bill Thiebaut. When residents of the Salt Creek neighborhood in Pueblo were unable to get the Transportation Commission to approve funding to replace the aging and dangerous Salt Creek Bridge, they turned to Bill Thiebaut. When airports in Alamosa, Lamar, Buena Vista, Steamboat Springs, and other non-metro area communities needed help with funding to keep their airports maintained and certified, Bill Thiebaut responded. When funding disappeared to fix the aging and dangerously decrepit schools in districts throughout the state - obligated under a court settlement but contingent on a budget surplus - Thiebaut found the money to help.
When people need help they turn to Bill Thiebaut.

Thiebaut, a union member, has a very strong labor voting record. He is strongly pro-choice and has an excellent environmental voting record. He is a staunch proponent of both the Colorado and U.S. Constitutions and the Bill of Rights.

He is also a committed and successful advocate for public education. For example, he sponsored the School Finance Act and other education bills, such as increasing funding for hard hit public schools, since serving in the majority. Because of his strong commitment, he has ensured funding for a school breakfast program and other funding projects for some of the poorest school districts in the state.

He has been a strong advocate on consumer issues, sponsoring legislation to force consumer friendly changes to health and automobile insurance as well as credit and banking law. He carried a Patient's Bill of Rights that called for reforms in the way HMO's dealt with their customers and advocated for a Prescription Drug Benefit. He sponsored legislation to require rate approval for insurance premium increases and to prohibit defacto redlining of certain parts of the state for higher insurance premiums. He passed legislation to limit the ability of the state or private parties to take the property or attach the assets of innocent third persons. He has worked to protect the homes and assets of senior citizens.

Bill Thiebaut's support for numerous issues important to people have made him popular with a variety of constituent groups. In his past elections he has garnered significant support from Independents, Republicans, and Democrats. This support reflects his commitment to doing the right thing; to representing his district and people in general; to solving the problems of his constituents either legislatively or through intercession with governmental or private agencies; to fighting for projects, issues and economic development throughout Colorado; and,
to being there for people when they need him regardless of life circumstance or situation.
