Info | I was born and raised in Bethel Park. I am the third of four children born to Pete and Ruth Edwards. As a child, I enjoyed swimming, sewing, playing softball and baseball with the neighborhood kids. My family attended Bethel Presbyterian Church, where I sang in the church choir and worked in the church nursery. I enjoyed 12 years of Girl Scouting: earning badges, camping, canoeing and skiing. While in high school, I was elected to student council, acted in several plays and served as the president of the Y-Teens Club. During the summers of high school and college, I worked in the bookkeeping department at the family business. My grandfather built Brookside Lumber Company in Bethel Park in 1926. It now employs over 160 local people in three different locations in the Pittsburgh area. In college, I also worked as a camp counselor and rifle instructor at YMCA Camp. During my senior year at college, I worked as a resident assistant in my dorm.
I graduated from Bethel Park High School in 1970 and I received a BS in Nursing from West Virginia University in 1974.
After graduating from West Virginia University, I worked in the neurosurgical unit at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. I have 25 years of experience in grassroots politics defending traditional family values. I have worked as an advocate for important statewide legislation as well as local school code changes. I have also served as an organizer of volunteers for campaigns for both local and statewide office, including Rick Santorum, Pat Toomey, Patricia McCullough and Sam Rohrer, as well as working in “Get out the Vote” projects. For 17 years, I have served on the local Republican committee and, more recently, the State Republican Committee.
My husband, Jim Means, and I met at West Virginia University. We were married in 1975. Jim and I are blessed to have five children and one granddaughter. Our children’s ages range from 19 to 33 years.
I have served as the coordinator of the Greater Pittsburgh Homeschooling Workshop and Curriculum Fair and as the editor of a homeschooling newsletter for the past 25 years. I have also served as a volunteer in Girl Scouts and 4-H where I taught karate, cake decorating, public speaking, and citizenship. I am an active member of South Hills Bible Chapel, in Peters Township, PA where I have taught children’s classes, and helped to organize the church’s participation in the March for Life.
