InfoAs the Mayor of Broward County I want to thank you for taking the time to visit Broward County’s web site and my web page.

Each November the County Commission elects new leaders. Until this year these leadership positions were known as Chair and Vice Chair. In November 2002, the voters voted in favor of changing the positions to Mayor and Vice Mayor. I have the honor of serving as the first Mayor of Broward County.

The Mayor presides over the County Commission meetings, appoints Commissioners to committees and boards and delivers an annual State of the County address. In addition, the Mayor is the chief spokesperson for the County. The Mayor sets the Commission agendas, delegates matters to Commission committees and has the authority to declare a State of Emergency, should a crisis develop.

I also am the Commissioner representing District 8. I was elected by the people of this district in 2000 and re-elected in 2002. My district includes portions of Weston, Southwest Ranches, Miramar, Pembroke Pines, Pembroke Park, Hallandale Beach and the unincorporated neighborhoods of Carver Ranches, Utopia, Lake Forest and Miami Gardens.

As the first person of Hispanic origin to lead the Commission, I hope to emphasize the rich diversity of Broward County. I view our multicultural community as a definite asset, especially as we seek to expand economic development and pursue international trade.

The Broward County Commission, the legislative branch of County government, is composed of nine members elected from single-member districts in staggered years.

The Commission appoints a County Administrator, a County Attorney and a Commission Auditor.
