InfoMy name is Sheri Carnahan, I live in Davenport and I’m running for Iowa House District 84 which encompasses West Davenport, Buffalo, Eldridge and surrounding areas.

I spent my childhood on our family farm in Hillsdale Illinois and at age 15, my family moved to Davenport. I graduated in 1971 from Davenport Central High School and attended the University of Iowa.

My husband Tom and I have been married for 12 years and are the proud parents of a loving blended family. We are blessed with 4 adult children and 7 grandchildren.

I retired from Iowa Workforce Development in 2008 after 31 years of service by assisting Iowa’s neediest citizens cope with the unemployment process and matching qualified workers with employers.

During my career I witnessed the devastation in my community when major industries closed their doors and displaced several thousand dedicated workers. This economic downturn not only affected workers but hundreds of small businesses. I also saw the positive impact our Community Colleges had when they provided retraining programs and workers began new jobs. My job required me to listen closely to both workers and businesses and I learned that often times the problems of business go hand in hand with worker’s concerns.

While a State employee, I served 3 terms as AFSCME Local 3011 President and Chief Steward, I was a member of the 2003 and 2005 State employee’s negotiating team. I am currently employed with AFSCME IA Council 61 working with members in the Eastern Iowa. I serve as a delegate to the Quad Cities Federation of Labor and am a member of Scott County Democrats.

Like a lot of people who have served, I got my start because of something that happened in my own “back yard”. My family lives in a neighborhood that has had its share of problems and my husband Tom was a victim of a violent crime. Like anything else, sometimes you must “fight the good fight” to get things done and with hard work and perseverance I made a difference!

I became the Captain of our Neighborhood watch and developed a working relationship with our City and Law Enforcement. Our neighborhood has improved. I served on the Citizens Advisory Board for Community Development Block Grants and the Scott County Empowerment Board giving me a firsthand look at how to improve our community.

My children received their education from the Davenport Community School District and my daughter Megan attended Community College going on to graduate from the University of Iowa. All my children have gone on to become productive adults and it is important to me that we maintain the quality educational system in Iowa.

My son Blair is a Gunnery Sgt in the Marines and is married to Ana, a Staff Sgt in the Marines. Both Blair and Ana have served 2 deployments in Iraq and will be deployed to Afghanistan in the near future. My daughter Kirsten is married to a Lieutenant in the Navy and has served overseas. My nephew Mark served 1 year in Egypt and 22 months in Iraq with the 133rd. Supporting our military families and taking care of our Veterans is very important to me and it will be a priority for me as State Representative.

Each of us has a vested interest in growing Iowa. No matter what sector of employment you represent, I think we all want the same things for Iowa. We want lower taxes, good paying jobs, dignity, a safe workplace, quality education, a clean environment, and help for our most vulnerable. I am no different and I believe with a common sense approach these goals are obtainable. I’ve spent my life listening, helping others, and improving life in our community. Now I’m ready to serve as your State Representative.
