InfoJohn Allen Eastman

John was born on March 7, 1947 in Springfield, Ohio to Richard and Wilberta “Billie” Eastman. The oldest of four children, John grew up in a home where he learned early the importance of independent thinking and community service. His parents are life-long community activists. In the past two years, Billie has been one of the leaders in the movement in Ohio for voting machines with a verifiable paper trail and one of the leaders of the Natural Law Party of Ohio as is John.

John is a ninth generation member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) dating back to Captain Underhill in the late 1600’s. "My life as a Quaker has given me an abiding faith in the goodness of people and an appreciation for peaceful solutions to conflicts." At various times John has served as Clerk (head) of both the Yellow Springs Friends Meeting and the Red Cedar Friends Meeting in East Lansing, Michigan.

John has always been highly motivated and concerned with excellence. He was an Eagle Scout, valedictorian of his Yellow Springs High School class, a Danforth Fellow and a National Science Foundation Fellow.

"One of my passions has been the environment which led to my education and career choices." John earned his B.S. in Engineering Science from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio in 1970, his M.S. in Environmental Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in 1972 and his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from The University of Washington in Seattle in 1977. From 1977 to 1984 John was on the engineering faculty at Michigan State University. From 1984 to 1987 John was Vice-President for Engineering with Beery and Associates in Mason, Michigan. Since 1987 John has been Chief Environmental Engineer at LJB, Inc., Engineers and Architects in Dayton, Ohio where he designs water and waste water treatment plants and is known as “Dr. Water”.

John Eastman views public service as the right and responsibility of every citizen to participate in our living democracy. “Serving our society, whether in a government position or a nongovernmental organization, should be one of our highest aspirations and one of the highest honors we can bestow upon our fellow citizens.” For the past several years, John has been serving on the Environmental Committee of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce. Recently he served as Chair for meetings of the Environment 2000 Project, a diverse volunteer group that identified environmental health issues and goals for Greene County, Ohio.

Politically, John has been very active in the Natural Law Party of Ohio, a progressive third party that believes in preventative measures and scientifically proven solutions to problems. John has run for several statewide offices as an independent candidate including Ohio State Senate in 1996, Lieutenant Governor in 1998, US Senate in 2000 and for Governor in 2002. It was during the third televised Gubernatorial debate in the 2002 race that John brought to light the proposed Taft-Blackwell Campaign Finance Disclosure Act that would have opened the floodgates to unlimited corporate financing of elections. As a result of John’s outing of this proposed legislation it was withdrawn but later reintroduced after the 2004 election in a special session.

Now, John has chosen to run for Ohio Secretary of State in 2006 out of his recognition that Ohio's electoral process must be overhauled to truly allow our citizens full participation in creating our government. “I want to bring back independent and nonpartisan integrity to the office, promote fair and open elections, and create an even playing field in the election process for all Ohio citizens and candidates regardless of their political persuasion.”

John is the father of four, has three grandchildren with two more on the way and currently lives in Centerville, Ohio with his second wife, Terri, whom he married on September 18, 2004. “Terri is my best friend and closest confidant in my political and public service endeavors. I could not be running for this office without her complete and enthusiastic support.”
