Info | Pete Hoffmann came to the Big Island in 1997 and resides with his wife, Joan, in Waikoloa. He served 28+ years in the US Army - Military Intelligence, retiring in the rank of Colonel as the US Defense Attache in Vienna, Austria in June 1993. During his military career, Pete served for 25 months in Vietnam, spent five years in Thailand, four years in Hawaii during the mid-1970s and three years in Munich, Germany. He is a graduate of the US Army War College and speaks both Thai and German.
Following his retirement from the US Army, he took a job as the ranking American on the staff of a 55 nation peace-keeping organization in Europe (the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe), headquartered in Vienna. His organization was responsible for arranging the first democratic elections in Bosnia and in setting up diplomatic missions to promote democracy in Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Chechnya, among other duties.
Since 'retirement' Pete has been active in a wide variety of community organizations and activities. Before his election in 2004, he was the District 9 representative on the County Transportation Commission, served as the Coordinator for the Waikoloa Learning Center, served as a member of the School Community Based Management Council at Waikoloa Elementary School and was a substitute teacher there. He recently resigned after 10 years as President of the Waikoloa Senior Center, was the editor for six years of the Waikoloa Breeze, a monthly community newspaper, and served as the Chairman of the Waikoloa Firewise Committee among other activities.
Pete currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra, works as one of two Chairmen of the Annual Food Basket Golf Tournament, remains the cantor at Sunday services at Annunciation Parish in Waimea and Puako, continues to play outfield for the Kona Gold Senior Softball team, and has been known to run at least one marathon a year.
Married for 45 years, Joan and Pete have four children (Steve, Mike, Rick and Sharon) and ten grandchildren, all living on the mainland.
Since election to the Council, Pete has stressed the need to revise the Council's outdated land use regulations that have stifled infrastructure development. He has introduced bills to modernize concurrency laws, update zoning policies, and has been a principal advocate for the Community Development Plans. Among other priorities, Pete believes this County is in desperate need of an effective Impact Fee ordinance, requires a major energy self-sufficiency program and a significant affordable housing program.
