Info | Hard Work
Public service should be hard work. Sheldon knows how to work hard.
Growing up the 7th of 8 children, early days revolved around providing the necessities of life for the family. Sheldon’s father was a math teacher, his mother ran the household, and the family worked together in a small construction company during the summers.
Whatever success Sheldon has achieved, it all comes back to the pattern of hard work Sheldon learned working side-by-side with his family.
Education
Sheldon attended public school from kindergarten through the 12th grade. In 1987, Sheldon graduated with honors with a degree in economics from Brigham Young University and went on to Yale Law School where he earned his Juris Doctorate.
Sheldon has witnessed first-hand how education can open doors. Education is the key to opportunity.
Business Experience
Sheldon understands what it takes to be successful in business: business is about taking risks, and executing well.
At both Hughes Electronics and Sprint, Sheldon led efforts to invest aggressively in new lines of business. To make these projects work, Sheldon had to cut a deal with arch rivals, build coalitions among industry leaders, and convince customers.
At Alaska Communications Systems, Sheldon was brought in as part of a new management team that helped return the company to profitability. Under his leadership, ACS enjoyed revenue growth and reduced costs.
Sheldon can break down the barriers that slow economic development within Alaska.
Boy Scouts
Sheldon is committed to youth and Boy Scouts. Most Wednesday evenings, and many weekends, Sheldon can be seen with his boys outside, camping, learning skills, having fun – and serving others. The highlights – so far – have been a kayaking trip around Culross Island and a hike over Resurrection Pass. Sheldon believes in the next generation, and loves to see that young people are challenged to do things they never thought possible. The process transforms them.
Family
Sheldon and his wife, Christine, married 21 years, are the parents of 6 girls, 1 boy and a foster daughter who has now returned to live with her own family again. There is nothing that they would rather do than spend time together as a family. They enjoy hiking, backpacking, skating and skiing. Friday nights are “pizza night” when family and friends enjoy pizza baked in the wood-fired brick oven Sheldon built himself.
