Info | William J. Sanchez was born in 1961 in Manhattan, New York. As the second child of Cuban immigrant parents, William was driven to succeed and has become a passionate advocate for social and economic justice. He learned to embrace a strong willed determination to protect and defend the rights of individuals, families and communities in need. He actively participated and co-founded numerous non-profit groups: City kids, Inc., Philippine Charities Foundation, Inc., a Grameen Village bank for the poor in Asia, serving thousands of poor families, and USA Micro-business.
He has represented thousands of immigrants, from Cuban and Haitian refugees to millionaire investors. A graduate of Columbus High School in 1979, he attended the University of Miami where he majored in economics and pursued his Jurist Doctorate at Georgetown Law School, where he graduated 1986. While attending Georgetown Law School, William volunteered six months of his life to work in a Vietnamese Refugee Camp in the Philippines, where he served in the administrative offices and taught Vietnamese refugees basic English. Immediately after law school, William worked as a staff attorney for a non-profit agency, Haitian Refugee Center in Miami, Florida.
After graduating from law school, William and his wife, Irene, moved to Miami where they have established their roots and raised their three children, William, Karina and Jonathan. His wife’s journey to America as a young girl from the Philippines in the early 80’s and his parent’s migration from Cuba in 1961 drove William to dedicate his life to serving immigrants. In 1989, William started his private practice specializing in Immigration and International Law. For almost 20 years, his wife, Irene, has effectively managed the practice as it has grown to represent thousands of individuals and corporations from around the world.
In 2004, President George W. Bush appointed him as Special Counsel for the Dept. of Justice Office of Special Counsel, Unfair Employment Practices. He received unanimous approval by the US Senate. Prior to his appointment as special counsel, William also managed a law firm, Sanchez & Lopez, and worked on numerous trials, appearing before the immigration courts and countless appeals before the Board of Immigration Appeals and numerous federal courts.
In 2006, William returned to private practice and continuously thrives to fight and protect immigrant's rights. One of the recent cases that he was actively involved in was the controversial repatriation of 15 Cubans from the old 7 mile bridge. He was the lead attorney, and helped successfully argue the matter in South Florida.
