InfoJamie Dorris is a Dallas County native and lifelong resident of Texas House District 113. Growing up in Sachse, she attended North Garland High School and was a member of the Sachse Church of Christ.

Jamie was instilled with a sense of community service and tradition at an early age. Her mother and twin sister are nurses at local area hospitals. Jamie’s father and grandfather have spent years in law enforcement working to protect the local community.

An alumna of the University of Texas at Dallas, Jamie worked her way through school and became the first college graduate in her family when she received her Bachelors of Arts degree in 2003 at age 25. Throughout college, Jamie saw what increasing tuition rates were doing to working students like her. She held a series of odd jobs — including singing at the Old San Francisco Steak House, taking inventory at retail stores and working at an insurance company — to pay her high tuition bills, student fees and book costs.

After college, Jamie saw fellow graduates struggling to pay back student loans as they entered an already tight job market with decreasing pay scales and rolled back health insurance benefits. Jamie began work in the legal field, where she saw working people feel the crunch of the economy. Older families were losing homes because of high mortgage interest rates and sky-rocketing homeowner insurance rates. Younger families just starting out found that affordable home loans were in short supply.

Jamie currently works as an Offer Coordinator for a human resources consulting company in Frisco, Texas, where she sees firsthand the effects of the economic downturn both on businesses and workers. In recent months, she has noticed that companies are not able to offer salaries at the same levels they once were, and that the rising cost of health care has forced some employers to scale back or even eliminate health care benefits packages. Qualified candidates are not being offered the salaries they are accustomed to, but most of them are grateful just to find work in their fields.

Motivated by the tradition of service that her family had instilled in her years ago, Jamie became increasingly involved in local organizations and immersed herself in Dallas County politics. She found that solutions were not being offered from the Legislature in Austin, and the challenges her community faces were not being met. With the values of faith and service that she had long embraced, Jamie knew it was time to take action, and on January 4th, Jamie filed to run for State Representative in Texas House District 113.
