Info | Richard Takechi, a jeweler who spent close to three decades in local government and politics, died Wednesday morning after a struggle with cancer.
Takechi, who was 73 when he died at Hospice House in Omaha, served four terms as an Omaha councilman and eight years as Douglas County Register of Deeds, also an elected position.
He was an Omaha councilman for 16 years, from 1977 to 1981 and 1985 to 1997. After two terms as Register of Deeds, 1996-2000, he lost a re-election bid in the 2004 primary.
He also ran for mayor in November 1994, finishing fourth. His last two races were for a seat on the Learning Community Council. He won in 2008 and was defeated last year.
Takechi was born in Idaho and came to Omaha as a toddler with his parents, who started watch and jewelry businesses. Takechi graduated from Omaha Technical High School in 1955 and the University of Nebraska at Omaha four years later.
He gradually became involved in the family business and eventually entered the political arena.
Takechi married late in life, at the age of 48. He met Japan native Chizuko Murakami when she escorted two Japanese exchange students to Omaha.
The couple divorced two years ago. They had two children, son Larry, who attends the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and daughter Victoria, a student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Besides his mother and children, survivors include his brother Stephan of Omaha, and three sisters: Jane Kawasaki of Denver and Julie Takechi and Jeri Endo, both of Omaha.
