Info | LANE, Amos, (father of James Henry Lane), a Representative from Indiana; born near Aurora, N.Y., March 1, 1778; attended the public schools; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice at Lawrenceburg, Ind., in 1808; moved to Burlington, Boone County, Ky., and practiced law; returned to Lawrenceburg, Ind., in 1814 and continued the practice of his profession; elected a member of the first State house of representatives in 1816; reelected in 1817; elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1833-March 3, 1837); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1836 to the Twenty-fifth Congress; resumed the practice of law; again a member of the State house of representatives in 1839 and served as speaker; died in Lawrenceburg, Ind., September 2, 1849; interment in the Lawrenceburg Cemetery; reinterment in Greendale Cemetery.
