Info | Dave Norris has spent the past three decades serving the people of Charlottesville/Albemarle, with a strong track record of accomplishment as a former Mayor/City Councilor, as an experienced non-profit leader, and as the owner of a successful small business.
Dave’s eight-year tenure on Charlottesville City Council included serving two terms as Mayor, from 2008-2012. Under his leadership, Charlottesville saw important gains in affordable housing, environmental sustainability, clean energy, youth opportunities, fiscal stewardship, and major upgrades to the Downtown Mall, city parks and other public infrastructure. Dave led the fight to create the robust Charlottesville Affordable Housing Fund in the City budget, which has helped to build, renovate or sustain over 2,000 units of affordable housing since its inception, starting with the Crossings at 4th & Preston.
Among other leadership roles in the non-profit sector, Dave was the founding Executive Director of PACEM (People and Congregations Engaged in Ministry); founding Coordinator of the Virginia Economic Development Corporation’s Micro Loan Program for small, women-owned and minority-owned businesses; Associate Director of Madison House (the student volunteer center at the University of Virginia); and board member for numerous Charlottesville/Albemarle-area organizations. He is especially proud to have served on the founding board for the Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP), as the founding chair of the Charlottesville Citizens’ Committee for Environmental Sustainability, as founder of the Charlottesville Vegetarian Festival (now the Vegan Roots Fest - the 2nd oldest vegfest in the country!), and as an active member of the PHAR (Public Housing Association of Residents) Advisory Board for nearly 25 years.
Today, in addition to managing the regional Financial Opportunity Center + Housing Hub at Piedmont Housing Alliance, Dave runs a successful small business and serves as volunteer Executive Director of the Charlottesville-Winneba Foundation, through which he has brought hundreds of area residents to West Africa since 2009 to experience the vibrant culture & rich heritage of Ghana and to explore the history & origins of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
Dave’s proudest role in life is as father to his three wonderful children, Eli, Chloe, and Benjamin (all of whom came up through the Charlottesville public schools), and as servant to two quirky but charming cats, Jinx and King Cheetah. Dave’s extensive collection of vintage Charlottesville/Albemarle postcards is regularly featured in books, exhibits and online posts by C’ville Images.
