InfoJanet Carlson lives in South Salem with her husband, Dee Kevin Carlson, and is the mother of three children, a daughter and two sons. A summa cum laude graduate of Willamette University in political science, Janet taught French and social studies in public schools for ten years. The highlight of her teaching experience was working with junior high youth as an activities director .

Since 1996, Carlson has worked as a consultant with public and non-profit agencies, specializing in children and families policy, planning, and evaluation. From 1989-91, she worked as a budget analyst for the Oregon Executive Department. Janet served as budget director and regional coordinator for the State Commission on Children and Families from 1991 to 1995. She was awarded a Ph.D. in special education and community resources from the University of Oregon in 1997 and administered the House Human Resources and Children and Families committees during the 1997 and 1999 legislative sessions.

Elected in November 2000 to the Oregon House of Representatives, Carlson was vice-chair of the House Revenue Committee and a member of the Joint Ways & Means Subcommittee on Human Services and the House Commerce Committee. She was also appointed to the Speaker's Task Force on Senior Services. During the interim, Carlson served on the Joint Interim Health and Human Resources Committee, the House Interim Business and Commerce Committee (vice-chair), and the Patient Choice in Health Care Committee (chair). She was also appointed to the Governor's Task Force on the Future of Seniors and Persons with Disabilities, the State Interagency Coordinating Council for Early Intervention and Early Childhood Special Education, the State Commission on Children and Families, and the Oregon Commission on Black Affairs.

Janet currently serves on the Marion County Children & Families Commission and the 24J Community Involvement Advisory Committee, and is active in her church.
