Info | Greg Macpherson is a three-term State Representative from Oregon’s House District 38. Born in Corvallis, and raised on a dairy farm in rural Linn County, Greg is a third-generation Oregonian.
A Democrat, Greg was first elected to the Oregon House of Representatives in 2002, and is currently Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, which is responsible for legislation protecting public safety, civil liberties, and consumer rights in Oregon.
In the House of Representatives, Greg helped develop and pass the country’s toughest restrictions on the raw material used to make meth. As a result, home meth labs in Oregon have been nearly eliminated. He passed legislation cracking down on internet sex predators. In 2003, he helped develop legislation to stabilize the state PERS system, ensuring that public employees have a secure retirement. More recently, he worked on several major bills promoting renewable energy, and crafted Measure 49, to protect farm lands and open space.
In addition to serving in the legislature, Greg has spent over 30 years as an employee benefits attorney, helping to provide health and retirement benefits to Oregon workers. His work has been recognized for excellence in the Best Lawyers in America and Oregon Super Lawyers.
Greg’s family has a long tradition of public service. His father, State Senator Hector Macpherson, created the landmark legislation that protects Oregon farm and forest lands from uncontrolled development. And, his grandfather served in the Oregon House of Representatives decades earlier, working to create the state’s Board of Higher Education.
Greg has coached youth soccer and basketball and volunteers at a legal aid clinic, providing free legal assistance to the poor. He’s also served as Chair of the Multnomah County Planning Commission and as Trustee for Trillium Family Services, a non-profit organization operating facilities across Oregon for mentally ill youth. As board member and President of the 40-Mile Loop Land Trust, he helped create the Springwater trail from central Portland to Estacada.
As a boy, Greg attended a two-room country schoolhouse, and graduated from Albany Union High School. He earned an A. B. from Harvard University and a J.D. from Georgetown Law School.
Greg is married to Tory Macpherson and is the father of twins, Mary and Alex, age 26.
Greg also plays the bagpipes, and has marched in the Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade seven times as a member of the Clan Macleay pipe band.
