Info | The Honourable Robert Ghiz was elected to represent the people of District 13, Charlottetown-Rochford Square, in the general election of September 29, 2003.
Robert was born in Charlottetown and grew up attending local area schools. Robert’s post secondary studies took him to Bishop’s University where he earned a degree in political studies.
Following graduation, Robert served as Special Assistant to the Minister of Canadian Heritage from 1997-1998. In 1998, he left government to work for the Bank of Nova Scotia where he had broad exposure to key issues affecting Canadians such as access to small business financing, the student loan program, and the implications of rising debt loads on provincial governments.
Robert’s passion for public service and Prince Edward Island led him to accept a position in the Prime Minister’s Office in 2001 where he was responsible for issues relating to Atlantic Canada. While in the Prime Minister’s Office, he developed a keen sense of the role of government and the need to build effective federal-provincial cooperation. Robert dealt with a number of issues of direct benefit and importance to Islanders and Atlantic Canadians, most notably infrastructure funding.
In 2003, Robert resigned his position in the Prime Minister’s Office to pursue his goal to serve Islanders in the Provincial Legislature. In April of 2003, he was elected leader of the Liberal Party of Prince Edward Island. In September of that same year, he was elected Leader of the Official Opposition.
Since becoming Leader of the Liberal Party and Leader of the Opposition, Robert has been working hard to re-vitalize the Liberal Party, hold the government accountable, and offer a positive alternative for Islanders. Under his leadership, the Liberal Party debt is on its way to being eliminated and the party has never been stronger.
In the Legislature, Robert continues to push for greater transparency and accountability while offering positive solutions to the issues of the day. Robert serves as the Opposition Critic for the Premier and Intergovernmental Affairs, Health and Social Services, Minister Responsible for Seniors and the Attorney General. He is also a member of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, the Standing Committee on Social Development, the Standing Committee on the Constitution of Canada and the Standing Committee on Fisheries, Intergovernmental Affairs and Transportation.
Robert Ghiz is married to Dr. Kate Ellis and they live in Charlottetown.
