Info | James Robert Butcher was born on March 9, 1933, in Detroit, Michigan. He attended Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, from 1951-1955 on a partial athletic scholarship. Jim graduated on the Dean's list with a B.A. degree in 1955. After graduation, pursued a law degree at the Valparaiso University Law School in Valparaiso, Indiana.
Following Jim's graduation from Valparaiso University Law School with an L.L.B. degree in 1958, he served as the First City-County Planning Director for Huntington, Indiana.
From 1959 through 1962, Jim served as Director of the Kokomo and Howard County Plan Commissions and as Director of the Kokomo Urban Renewal Commission.
From 1962-1964, he served as general counsel, and worked in stewardship and public relations for Youth for Christ International, Wheaton, Illinois.
From 1964 to the present time, Jim has engaged in the general practice of law in Kokomo, Indiana.
Since 1968, he has been the senior partner of Butcher, Ball, and Lowry Law Firm. He is a member of the Indiana and Howard County Bar Associations, authorized to practice law in Indiana, Illinois, and before the Supreme Court of the United States. Jim is an estate planning speaker at seminars and conferences across central Indiana.
In addition, he has appeared on television programs to provide legal expertise on estate planning and medicaid planning topics. He is a member of the Christian Legal Society and is active in his local church where he has served in many different capacities. Jim married his wife, Marvel, in 1953, and they have three (3) children and seven (7) grandchildren.
Frequent speaker at estate planning seminars on Wills, Revocable and Irrevocable Living Trusts, elder-care law, pour-over wills, Durable Business Power of Attorney, Health Care Power of Attorney, Living Wills, etc.
Author and sponsor of numerous bills in Indiana State Legislature affecting estate planning, reduction of Indiana inheritance taxes, etc.
Member of Board of Directors and first President of the Indiana Family Institute, Inc. (affiliated with Focus on the Family).
Elected to Indiana Senate for four (4) year term in 1978 for Senate District 21; Re-elected in November, 1982; Chairman of Senate Economic Development & Evaluation Committee, Member of Senate Finance Committee; Ranking member of Public Policy Committee. Also,served as the Chairman of the Sunset Committee and Senate Ethics Committee.
Recipient of "Sagamore of The Wabash" award from Governor Robert D. Orr in 1984 for outstanding service to the State of Indiana.
Frequent speaker in churches, colleges, schools, civic clubs, service groups, youth meetings and businessmen's and businesswomen's functions.
Member of St. Joseph Hospital Foundation Board.
Hobbies include sports and collecting Civil War and Abraham Lincoln memorabilia and impersonating President Abraham Lincoln (in full costume) for church groups, civic clubs, school groups, etc.
