Info | A lifelong resident of New York City, Vanessa L. Gibson has a strong commitment to serving her Bronx community that began when she was a student in the city’s public school system and culminated in her successful election to a seat in the New York State Assembly on June 2, 2009.
After graduating from Murray Bergtraum High School for Business Careers in 1997, Assemblywoman Gibson went on to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in May 2001 in Sociology with minor concentrations in Business and Criminal Justice from the State University at Albany (UAlbany). In her senior year at UAlbany Ms. Gibson was an intern for Assemblywoman Aurelia Greene, who represented the 77th Assembly District from the Bronx, and formed what has become a lifelong relationship with her mentor.
Throughout her internship and subsequent employment with the Assembly, Ms. Gibson met with thousands of constituents, community activists and lobbyists who traveled to Albany to support valuable programs or discuss important constituent matters. She worked tirelessly alongside Assemblywoman Aurelia Greene as her Legislative Analyst to ensure that the needs of the 77th Assembly District were addressed. Working with local residents, community based organizations, labor unions, parents and educators she was responsible for developing public policies to meet the needs of community residents, and create jobs for our families.
Ms. Gibson assisted in formulating key public policies that have a direct impact upon working people, low income families, senior citizens and young people in the West Bronx including legislation to protect the housing rights of Section 8 recipients, improve educational opportunities for our young people, assisting our seniors and encouraging job creation.
In November 2003 Ms. Gibson was promoted to Bronx District Office Manager for Assemblywoman Aurelia Greene and became the eyes and ears of the 77th Assembly District. She managed the district office staff, worked on important West Bronx projects and participated in many meetings with local residents, agency representatives, community groups, businesses, school officials, churches, unions and constituents on behalf of Assemblywoman Greene. Ms. Gibson was directly involved in assisting constituents with case management services and securing resources to assist in improving the quality of life in the Claremont, Highbridge, Mount Eden, and Morris Heights sections of the Bronx. She is a staunch advocate for tenants’ rights, affordable quality health care, educational opportunities for all, our elderly and jobs that provide long term employment opportunities.
Ms. Gibson has established a strong working relationship with many community based organizations in the West Bronx along with Community Boards 4 and 5. She also has been an advocate and supporter of the parents, educators and community leaders in Bronx School District 9. Her drive and initiative enhanced her involvement with local community residents.
A resident of Morris Heights, Ms. Gibson received her Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Policy Analysis & Evaluation from Baruch College, City University of New York (CUNY), in May 2009. Well respected by her constituents, Ms. Gibson continues to show how one person can truly make a difference within their community while working collectively with others.
Assemblywoman Gibson looks forward to using her position as a state lawmaker to improve housing, health care, programs for our seniors and youth, educational and job opportunities for all residents of the 77th Assembly District.
