Info | Randy Credico is a political satirist/impressionist and social activist. He was born and raised in Pomona California. His father introduced him to show business as manager of the Royal Tahitian, a night spot which featured such entertainers as Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, James Brown, and Bobby Darin. Randy performed on the comedy circuit for more than twenty years, making regular appearances in Las Vegas and comedy clubs around the nation.
Credico decided to combine his love of comedy with political activism. He spent much of the 1980’s in Central America with the peace movement, raising money and organizing “Humorists Against War (HAW).” His first national television appearance was on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1984, and Credico used it a platform to challenge Reagan’s policies.
Credico was a close friend of the civil rights attorney William Kunstler and became director of the William Moses Kunstler Fund for Racial Justice. The fund targeted issues of injustice that affected communities of color. A major focus was the war on drugs. In 1998, the fund helped create the Mothers of the New York Disappeared, which became the leading organization fighting New York’s draconian Rockefeller Drug Laws. Largely as a result of the publicity secured by the weekly protests Credico organized, the laws were reformed.
In 1999, he brought international attention to the racially charged drug arrests of the “Tulia 46,” where 10% of the African American population of Tulia, Texas were arrested by a crooked undercover narcotics officer. These individuals faced an average of 50 years in prison. Eventually, justice prevailed and they were set free.
Randy has been recognized by his peers for his work with the Kunstler Fund and received awards from Union Square, NAACP and Drug Policy Alliance. Charles Grodin in his recent memoir said that Randy Credico is his “hero.” The late writer Olivia Goldsmith has said that Credico has sprung more women out of prison than anybody. Credico is the subject of Laura Kitelinger’s award winning documentary Sixty Spins Around the Sun and is featured along with Andrew Cuomo and Russell Simmons in the documentary Lockdown USA.
