Governor Gilmore appointed David G. Brickley January 17, 1998, to become Director of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. Prior to his appointment, Brickley was a partner in the law firm of Pfitzner, Morley, and Brickley, and served in the Virginia House of Delegates. Currently, he serves as an ex-officio member on and secretary of the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Board, the Board of Conservation and Development of Public Beaches, the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation, and as an ex-officio member on the Breaks Interstate Park Commission. He's also a member of the State Land Evaluation Advisory Committee, the Coastal Land Management Advisory Council, and is State Liaison Officer for the Land and Water Conservation Fund.


Brickley was first elected to the House of Delegates in 1975. He served on numerous committees and most recently served as Chairman of the Health, Welfare and Institutions Committee and Vice Chairman of the Finance Committee. Brickley also chaired the Conservation and Natural Resources Committee Subcommittee and served on the Courts of Justice Committee.

He was co-founder of the Virginia Railway Express, Virginia's commuter rail system, and has served as its chairman of the board. Brickley also is a member of the Virginia Joint Commission on Health Care, the Governor's Northern Virginia Transportation Coordinating Committee, and several other committees dealing with taxes and health care.

Brickley is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University and the George Mason University School of Law. He served in the United States Air Force in Vietnam where he received the Bronze Star.

Active in the community, he was twice selected the Jaycees Outstanding Young Man of the Year and he received the Virginia State Jaycees Award for civic and patriotic activities. Three times he was chosen one of the top 10 legislators in Virginia by the Northern Virginia Technology Council. The Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics named him the Child Advocate of the Year in 1994, and he was nominated in 1997 for the National Child Advocate of the Year Award.

David Brickley lives with his wife, Lori Lee, and son, Justin, in Woodbridge, Va. He has a daughter, Terri, and a son, David, Jr.
