Info | Bryan O. Steward, 39, a civil-litigation lawyer and an adjunct business professor at Capital University and Columbus State Community College. He has a law degree from Capital, a master's degree from Franklin University and a bachelor's degree from Bowling Green State University. A graduate of Northland High School, he has two children in the school district.
The Columbus school board unanimously chose attorney Bryan O. Steward as its newest member yesterday, the board's second appointment in a month.
Steward, 39, replaces former President Terry Boyd on the seven-member board. Boyd left last month to focus on his job at Franklin University.
Steward is a civil-litigation attorney and an assistant vice president for Fifth Third Community Development Corp., according to his application.
Steward refused to answer any questions when he was contacted yesterday.
Today, during a morning press conference, he said, "My priority is to get to know the board members and the issues that face Columbus City Schools. ... I still need to learn about these issues in detail."
He serves as an adjunct professor at Columbus State Community College and Capital University, according to his resume.
Steward lives in Blacklick and has two children in Columbus schools' Olde Orchard Elementary. A third child does not attend district schools.
In his application to the board, he wrote that "strategic management of resources" is "the most important issue facing Columbus City Schools."
His wife, Rachell Ridley-Steward, is a former Columbus schools teacher and is listed as a substitute teacher in current district records.
Board President Carol Perkins said Steward was chosen for his legal knowledge and experience in academia.
The board plans to hold a news conference this morning to announce his appointment. He will take the seat at the next school-board meeting, on Tuesday.
Steward's appointment ends Dec. 31. He said in his application that he would run for election in November to complete Boyd's term, which continues through 2011.
School-board seats are elected positions, but board members fill vacancies by appointment.
There were 15 applicants for Boyd's seat. The school board chose three finalists and interviewed them privately last week. The vote for Steward followed two closed-door board meetings.
Steward is the second appointment this year. Last month, the board chose Ramona Reyes, president of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, to succeed W. Carlton Weddington, who was elected to the Ohio House in November.
