Blackie Coate, a disabled World War II veteran, was born in rural Ohio and resides in Ocean Springs, Miss. A Canadian commando during the war, he was seriously wounded in a raid at Dieppe, France, in 1942. He survived almost two years in a German prison camp and spent six years in hospitals after the war. He was a sheet metal journeyman and a construction supervisor after that. He is retired.
