Rose Fernandez was born on Thanksgiving Day in 1957 at St. Joseph Hospital in Milwaukee. The oldest of eight children, Rose and her siblings moved to Illinois after her father’s job was transferred out of state.
A public high school graduate from a large Catholic family, Rose was educated in both private and public schools. She graduated with University Honors and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a Minor in History from Northern Illinois University in 1979. Rose passed her Wisconsin state nursing board examinations on her first try and began her career in an inpatient medical unit at Milwaukee Children’s Hospital on 16th and Wisconsin Avenue. In less than a year, she was promoted to Charge Nurse for the evening shift, providing patient care while also supervising the entire staff assigned to the evening shift.
By 1984 Rose was granted a pediatric nursing assistantship which covered her tuition and a small stipend to pursue a Master’s Degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While tackling full-time graduate studies she continued to work 30 hours over the 3 nights of every other weekend in the emergency department at what by then had been renamed the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Once she finished her two years of course work, she took full-time hours in the ER. As the hospital expanded to become the state’s only level one pediatric trauma center and moved to its present location, Rose was promoted to Trauma Program Coordinator where she managed the establishment of the multidisciplinary Trauma Team, equipped the new Trauma Rooms, and trained staff from various disciplines. Fernandez held national certifications in emergency nursing, trauma care, and advanced life support, and she lectured at national conferences on pediatric trauma care and trauma team management.
