Info | Barrett, who has served in various roles under three presidents, was the first Republican woman to run for governor in Arizona but lost to Fife Symington in the 1994 primary.
She also served in aeronautics and trade policy roles under President Reagan and the first President Bush and was the first woman deputy administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration. Barrett, a lawyer, is married to Intel Chief Executive Craig Barrett and is chairwoman of the board of trustees at Thunderbird, the American Graduate School of International Management in Glendale.
Barrett also serves as chairwoman of the U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy, a behind-the-scenes group that makes recommendations to the president, the secretary of State and Congress on efforts to tout American policy to the public abroad.
Her previous presidential appointments also include vice chairman of the Civil Aeronautics Board. She has also been a member of the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services.
Earlier in her career, Barrett served as a partner at Evans, Kitchel & Jenckes, a Phoenix law firm. She earned her bachelor's, master's and law degrees from Arizona State University and was a teaching fellow at Harvard University's Institute of Politics.
