Info | I am Rochelle Wells, Tempe Elementary School No. 3 governing board member. My February, 2007, governing board appointment has enabled me to pursue my passion to advocate for children. I have chosen to run because I believe that I am making a difference. I am a stay-at-home mother who is willing to spend the time and energy to ensure our children have access to an educational experience that will promote and support their highest levels of student achievement. Also, I will continue working hard to ensure that our teachers have the resources to teach our students.
As a parent of three children in middle school in this school district, I believe that I represent the daily, complex life within the schools. My school volunteer work, participation on the Arizona Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Board of Managers, and trainings from the Arizona School Boards Association (ASBA) have helped me to understand these needs. This year, ASBA selected me to represent my district on the Federal Relations Network. These opportunities have been an invaluable learning experience to strengthen my advocacy skills for students at the local, statewide, and national levels.
The Tempe Elementary public school district is expected to provide a quality education despite many challenges: the inadequate funding from our legislature and our federal government, the competition for funding with charter and private schools, the unfunded mandate of No Child Left Behind, decreasing enrollment, and higher transportation costs. Today’s educational leaders must be able to embrace change and use their leadership and advocacy skills to overcome these challenges.
I look forward to continue using my education and skills to serve my school district. I earned my bachelor’s degree in business administration from Bucknell University and my master’s degree in social work from Arizona State University. I understand the district’s fiscal responsibilities. As a social worker, I embrace the opportunity to listen to everyone’s concerns so that I can continue to be an advocate for our students, teachers, staff, and school communities.
Our nation has had governing boards since 1642. Our nation’s founders wanted to be sure that schools were controlled by local residents. Over the past 18 months, I have experienced first-hand that local control is still viable today. How invigorating it is when 150 people and students come to a governing board meeting to voice their concerns! How exciting it is to visit schools and observe students and teachers engaged in learning! I am also grateful to the people who call me daily with their concerns and compliments. I enjoy being an ambassador for my school district. I look forward to being elected so that I will be able to continue to serve and advocate for our students.
