Info | LYMAN, Joseph, a Representative from Iowa; born in Lyons, Ionia County, Mich., September 13, 1840; attended the common schools in Ohio; moved to Big Grove, Iowa, in 1857; attended Iowa College, Grinnell, Iowa; enlisted in the Union Army in 1861 and served in Company E, Fourth Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Cavalry; adjutant of the Twenty-ninth Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry, from October 19, 1862, to February 21, 1865, and major of the same regiment from February 21, 1865, to August 10, 1865; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1866 and commenced practice in Council Bluffs, Iowa; deputy collector of internal revenue of the fifth district of Iowa, 1867-1870; judge of the circuit court in 1884; elected as a Republican to the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses (March 4, 1885-March 3, 1889); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1888; resumed the practice of law; died in Council Bluffs, Iowa, July 9, 1890; interment in Fairview Cemetery.
