Gillis), a Representative from Iowa; born near Wapello, Louisa County, Iowa, November 9, 1873; attended the common schools and the University of Iowa at Iowa City; studied law at the National University Law School, Washington, D.C.; edited and published the Ida Grove Pioneer in 1893 and 1894, the Columbus Junction Gazette 1899-1901, the Shenandoah World 1901-1916, and was also editor of the Hamburg Democrat; member of the State senate from January 1, 1907, until March 3, 1909, when he resigned to enter Congress; elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-first Congress (March 4, 1909-March 3, 1911); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1910; resumed newspaper activities in Shenandoah, Iowa; postmaster of Shenandoah from May 29, 1915, until September 1, 1916, when he resigned; assistant treasurer of the Democratic National Committee in 1916 and its director of finance 1917-1920; delegate at large to the Democratic National Convention in 1920; engaged in the practice of law in Washington, D.C.; editor of the Window Seat, a weekly syndicate letter for country newspapers, from 1925 until his death in Washington, D.C., November 18, 1949; interment in Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
