Info | Senator from Florida; born in Montgomery, Montgomery County, Ala., September 14, 1878; moved to Pensacola, Fla., with his parents in 1887; attended the public schools and Washington and Lee University at Lexington, Va.; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1899 and commenced practice in Pensacola, Fla.; member, State house of representatives 1903-1905; prosecuting attorney of Escambia County 1904-1917; moved to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1917 to continue the practice of law; member of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee on Crime 1934; president of the American Bar Association 1934; general counsel for the Florida East Coast Railway 1931-1941 and for a variety of other transportation-related businesses; businessman with interests in railroads, shipping, and newspapers; appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Park Trammell and served from May 26 to November 3, 1936, when a successor was elected; was not a candidate for election to fill the vacancy; resumed the practice of law in Jacksonville, Fla., until his death in Highlands, N.C., September 22, 1953; interment in Oaklawn Cemetery, Jacksonville, Fla.
