Info | COOK, John Calhoun, a Representative from Iowa; born in Seneca, Seneca County, Ohio, December 26, 1846; attended the common schools; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1867 and commenced practice in Newton, Jasper County, Iowa; judge of the sixth judicial district of Iowa in 1878; successfully contested as a Democrat the election of Marsena E. Cutts to the Forty-seventh Congress and took his seat March 3, 1883, the closing day of the Congress; elected to the Forty-eighth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Marsena E. Cutts and served from October 9, 1883, to March 3, 1885; resumed the practice of law in Newton, Iowa; moved to Webster City, Iowa, where he became attorney for a railroad company; died in Algona, Kossuth County, Iowa, June 7, 1920; interment in Riverview Cemetery.
