| Info | Democrat Elsie Flemings is a New England native, having lived in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and western Maine. She has lived in Bar Harbor for six years, and attended College of the Atlantic.
Major state issues are also the most pressing issues locally, Flemings said in a recent interview. The Governor’s school district consolidation plan is at the top of the list.
“The future of the schools has been a major concern for people on the island, in the region, and the entire state,” she said
Another major concern is sustainable economic development, which she believes is an issue of public policy.
State law requires a balanced state budget. When programs must be cut, Flemings says she would proceed carefully.
“What about assistance for victims of domestic violence? Education? Road repairs? What is expendable here? Balancing a state budget takes a lot of energy,” she said.
Flemings said she favors sustainable growth, “So that we don’t run into these shortfalls.”
Throughout the spring, Flemings has conducted a series of public “listening” forums to sound out local voters on the issues.
Flemings says she is proud of her work with various community and statewide projects, including the Informed Growth Act, which requires potential retail stores over 75,000 square feet to independently develop a report outlining the impact the store will have on the local economy and tax revenue. She has also worked on a bill to better investigate the impacts of “big-box” stores around the state.
Flemings has served as the United States’ youth delegate to the United Nations Commission on Sustainability, and also worked as a congressional staffer in Washington.
She works for the Union River Watershed Coalition.
Flemings said listening is key to better representation.
“I’ll work as part of a team,” she said. “We need to understand the issues and needs of the community, and be creative in our thinking.”
