Info | THAYER, Andrew Jackson, a Representative from Oregon; born in Lima, Livingston County, N.Y., November 27, 1818; attended the common schools; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1849 and commenced practice in Lima; crossed the continent in 1853 and settled on a farm near Corvallis, Benton County, Oreg.; resumed the practice of law and also engaged in agricultural pursuits; appointed by President Buchanan United States attorney for the district of Oregon on March 2, 1859, and resigned after six months’ service, having become a candidate for Congress; presented credentials as a Democratic Member-elect to the Thirty-seventh Congress and served from March 4 to July 30, 1861, when he was succeeded by George K. Shiel, who contested his election; district attorney for the second district of Oregon 1862-1864; served as circuit judge of the second judicial district of Oregon from 1870 until his death in Corvallis, Oreg., April 28, 1873; interment in Crystal Lake Cemetery.
