Tom Stroock, 76, came to Wyoming in 1948 as a roughneck on an oil drilling rig after graduation from Yale University and three and one-half years of World War II service in the United States Marines. He started his own oil and gas properties firm in 1952 and was active in several business organizations: The Stroock Leasing Corporation and Alpha Exploration, Inc., oil producers; Key Bank of Wyoming, Casper, Director; and Key Bancshares of Wyoming, Cheyenne, where he was a Director and Chairman of the Audit Committee. He was a member of the National Petroleum Council in Washington, DC from 1970 thru 1977, a member of the National Small Business Advisory Board from 1981 thru 1983 and a member of the National Public Lands council from 1982 thru 1985.

Tom has been President of the Casper School Board, Chairman of the Wyoming School Boards Association, Chairman of the Wyoming Higher Education Council, and Wyoming�s representative on the Education Commission of the States. He was elected State Senator from Natrona County for five separate terms (1967-1969; 1971-1975; 1979-1989) where he served as Vice President of the Senate, Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Co-Chairman of the Joint Appropriations Committee, and member of the Wyoming Select Water Oversight Committee. Tom was the first Chairman of the Wyoming Natural Gas Pipeline Authority. In 1974 Stroock was the Republican Party�s nominee for Wyoming�s seat in the United States Congress and from 1975 thru 1978 he was Chairman of the Wyoming Republican Party, as well as Chairman of Wyoming Health Reform Commission from 1993 to 1996.

He and his wife, Marta, were married in 1949. They have four daughters � Margie (Mrs. Andrew Low), an attorney in Denver; Sandy (Mrs. Miguel Leotta), a Casper biology teacher; Betty (Mrs. Steve Martinka), a geologist and former U.S. National women�s biathlon champion; and Anne (Mrs. Bruce Ladd), a television reporter and health care executive. Stroock�s hobbies are skiing, fly fishing, backpacking and playing with his seven grandchildren.

He resigned in December, 1992 as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Guatemala after serving for three and one-half years in Central America. He is presently a Trustee of The Nature Conservancy, Chairman of the University del Valle Foundation in Guatemala with an Honorary Doctor of Education Degree awarded in 2001, Chairman of the International Advisory Board at the University of Wyoming, Director of the Wyoming Medical Center and of the Platte River Parkway. He now serves as Professor of Public Diplomacy at the University of Wyoming, which awarded him, in 1995, the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws.
