Info | LIPPITT, Henry Frederick, (great-uncle of John H. Chafee; great-great-uncle of Lincoln D. Chafee), a Senator from Rhode Island; born in Providence, R.I., October 12, 1856; attended private schools; graduated from Brown University, Providence, R.I., in 1878; entered the cotton manufacturing business; director of a bank and of several mill insurance companies; vice president of the People’s Savings Bank of Providence; served on the Governor’s staff with the rank of colonel 1888-1889; served as president of the New England Cotton Manufacturers’ Association in 1889; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1911, to March 3, 1917; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1916; chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of Agriculture (Sixty-second Congress); again became actively engaged in the textile industry; died in Providence, R.I., December 28, 1933; interment in Swan Point Cemetery.
