Info | Sharon S. Steckman is a member of the Iowa House of Representatives. She is a member of the Economic Growth, Education, Human Resources, Natural Resources, and Ways and Means committees. She is vice chairman of the Education Appropriations Subcommittee.
Mrs. Steckman was born in Chicago, Illinois. She earned a bachelor's degree in education (with honors) from Iowa State University, commuting from Mason City to Ames three days a week for two years. She had been a student at Kearney State College (Kearney, Nebraska) earlier in life. Later, she earned a master's degree in education from Morningside College while working as a teacher. Through an arrangement with University of Northern Iowa, she did her student teaching in Mason City - the first Iowa State education student to do so. In 1980 she began teaching elementary school in the Mason City Community School District; she was also a Title I reading specialist; later, she taught in the Mason City School District.
In 1980, Sharon began working for the Mason City Community School District, teaching second grade, fourth grade and fifth grade and working as a Title I reading specialist. While teaching for the Mason City School District, she went on to earn her master’s degree in education from Morningside College.
She won her seat in the Iowa House of Representatives elections, 2008, with the Teamsters's endorsement.
