Born and raised in South Carolina as the youngest son of a Navy Veteran, Rob learned the importance of hard work from a very early age. Facing staggering medical bills after his father passed away, 14-year old Rob went to work washing dishes to help support his family. Through hard work and lots of support from family and the community around them, Rob’s family weathered the financial storm.

As a freshman at the College of Charleston, Rob made the decision to enlist in the Marine Corps, and in January of 1995, he began basic training at Parris Island, SC. Shortly after his promotion to Sergeant, Rob was selected to become a Marine infantry officer. In his 13 years in the Marine Corps, Rob was deployed to Albania, Yugoslavia, Djibouti, Liberia, and twice to Iraq.

Rob met his wife Shane while attending the College of Charleston. They were married in 1997. In 2002, they celebrated the birth of their son Ransom. When he was only two, he was ill with a rare form of bacterial meningitis. Rob and Shane knew they were blessed to be able to receive the best healthcare and doctors in America and that not all families are so lucky.

In February 2008, Rob left the Marine Corps to offer South Carolina innovative ideas and new leadership. As a Marine, Rob learned the difference a good leader can make in a moment of crisis. His decision to leave the Corps was not an easy one, but Rob deeply believes that South Carolina’s Second District deserves a strong leader in Washington.
