Info | UPSON, William Hanford, a Representative from Ohio; born in Worthington, Franklin County, Ohio, on January 11, 1823; attended Tallmadge Academy, pursued classical studies, and was graduated from Western Reserve College, Hudson, Ohio, in 1842; studied law one year in the law department of Yale College and in Painesville, Ohio; was admitted to the bar in 1845 and commenced practice in Akron, Ohio, in 1846; prosecuting attorney of Summit County 1848-1850; member of the State senate 1853-1855; delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1864 and 1876; elected as a Republican to the Forty-first and Forty-second Congresses (March 4, 1869-March 3, 1873); chairman, Committee on Private Land Claims (Forty-second Congress); was not a candidate for renomination in 1872; appointed associate justice of the supreme court of Ohio in 1883; elected judge of the circuit court of Ohio in 1884 and served until 1894; resumed the practice of law; died in Akron, Ohio, April 13, 1910; interment in Glendale Cemetery
