Info | BLACK, James Conquest Cross, a Representative from Georgia; born in Stamping Ground, Scott County, Ky., May 9, 1842; attended the common schools and the high school at Newcastle, Ky., and was graduated from Georgetown College, Kentucky, in 1862; during the Civil War enlisted as a private in Company A, Ninth Kentucky Cavalry, in the Confederate Army; moved to Augusta, Ga., in 1865; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1866 and commenced practice in Augusta, Ga.; member of the State house of representatives 1873-1877; served as president of the Augusta Orphan Asylum 1879-1886; member of the city council; served as city attorney; elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth Congresses and served from March 4, 1893, to March 4, 1895, when he resigned; subsequently elected to fill the vacancy caused by his own resignation and served from October 2, 1895, to March 3, 1897; was not a candidate for renomination in 1896; resumed the practice of law in Augusta, Ga., until his death there on October 1, 1928; interment in Magnolia Cemetery.
