Info | SLEMP, Campbell Bascom, (son of Campbell Slemp), a Representative from Virginia; born at Turkey Cove, Lee County, Va., September 4, 1870; attended the public schools; was graduated from Virginia Military Institute at Lexington in 1891; studied law in the University of Virginia at Charlottesville; was admitted to the bar in 1901 and commenced practice at Big Stone Gap, Wise County, Va.; commandant of cadets at Marion Military Institute for one year; professor of mathematics at Virginia Military Institute for several years, resigning in 1901 to enter professional and business life at Big Stone Gap, Va.; was chairman of the Republican State committee from 1905 to 1918, when he was elected a member of the Republican National Committee; was elected as a Republican to the Sixtieth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his father, Campbell Slemp; was reelected to the Sixty-first and to the six succeeding Congresses and served from December 17, 1907, to March 3, 1923; declined to be a candidate for reelection in 1922; was appointed secretary to President Calvin Coolidge on September 4, 1923, and served until March 4, 1925, when he resigned; continued the practice of his profession in Big Stone Gap, Va., and in Washington, D.C., until 1932, when he retired and resided at Big Stone Gap, Va.; died August 7, 1943, in Knoxville, Tenn.; interment in the family cemetery at Turkey Cove, Va.
