InfoPAUL, John, (son of John Paul [1839-1901]), a Representative from Virginia; born in Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, Va., December 9, 1883; attended private and public schools; was graduated from Virginia Military Institute at Lexington in 1903 and was an instructor in that institution in 1903 and 1904; was graduated from the law department of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville in 1906; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Harrisonburg, Va., in 1907; member of the State senate 1911-1915; was an unsuccessful candidate for the House of Representatives in 1916 and 1918; entered the United States Army in May 1917 and served throughout the First World War with the Three Hundred and Thirteenth Field Artillery of the One Hundred and Fifty-fifth Field Artillery Brigade, being in the American Expeditionary Forces from May 1918 to May 1919; again served in the State senate, 1919-1922; city attorney of Harrisonburg 1919-1923; successfully contested as a Republican the election of Thomas W. Harrison to the Sixty-seventh Congress and served from December 15, 1922, to March 3, 1923; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1922 to the Sixty-eighth Congress; special assistant to the Attorney General of the United States in 1923 and 1924; delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1912, 1916, 1920, and 1924; resumed the private practice of law in 1924; United States district attorney for the western district of Virginia 1929-1932; appointed United States district judge for the western district of Virginia in 1932 and served until his retirement in 1959; continued in service as a judge on an assigned basis as well as operating his farm in Rockingham County, Va.; died at Ottobine, Rockingham County, Va., February 13, 1964; interment in Woodbine Cemetery, Harrisonburg, Va.
