InfoHe was born October 28, 1798. He died in controversy at 34 years of age on October 30, 1830. "Symmes" was a popular and helpful figure to farmers and settlers in the Indiana Territory. He married Clarissa Pike, a daughter of the famous General Zebulon Pike, who had discovered Pike's Peak in Colorado. They had six children. Symmes received an appointment to a position in the government land office in Vincennes, Indiana. After serving for years with a reputation for integrity, Symmes was caught in a political trap set by his father's enemies. He was accused of embezzlement, and fired. There was an explanation for the events but, driven by a desire to hurt General Harrison, opposing politicians covered up the facts. Disillusioned and upset by his experience, Symmes died in the middle of the crisis.
