InfoBOWMAN, Charles Calvin, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Troy, Rensselaer County, N.Y., November 14, 1852; attended the public schools and Lansingburg Academy, Troy, N.Y.; learned the woodworking trade; was graduated in civil engineering from Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., in 1875; engaged in civil engineering work for the State of Massachusetts at Danvers in 1875; organized the western shipping department of the Pennsylvania Coal Co., Pittston, Pa., in 1876, which he managed until 1883; served as general manager of the Florence Coal Co., in 1883 and 1884, later operating as an independent miner and shipper of anthracite coal; mayor of the city of Pittston in 1886; also served as a member of the city council for sixteen terms; delegate to the Independent Republican State convention in 1890 and to the Republican State convention in 1898; presented credentials as a Republican Member-elect to the Sixty-second Congress and served from March 4, 1911, to December 12, 1912, when the seat was declared vacant; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1912 to the Sixty-third Congress; resumed the coal business; died in Pittston, Pa., July 3, 1941; interment in Pittston Cemetery.
