InfoFor three decades in public service, Sheila Dixon has been a champion of Baltimore neighborhoods and a pioneer for women and minorities. Sheila started her political career in Druid Heights fighting alongside the Druid Heights Community Development Corporation in the revitalization of the neighborhood, proving that with the proper energy and investment, West Baltimore communities can flourish. She took her skills to the office of Mayor, where she delivered basic City services on time and ushered in 30-year record lows in crime and homicides.

FAMILY, FAITH, AND SERVICE: Sheila is the mother of two adult children, Jasmine Hampton Brooks and Joshua Hampton. She lives in Southwest Baltimore and is an active member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, where she serves as a member of the Stewardess Board.

Sheila began serving her West Baltimore neighbors on the City Council in 1987 before being elected City Council President in 1999, the first African-American woman to hold the citywide position. She became the 48th Mayor of the city of Baltimore in January 2007, succeeding Mayor Martin O'Malley.

Sheila is a graduate of the Baltimore City public school system and holds a bachelor's degree from Towson University and a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University. She is a former elementary school teacher and adult education instructor with the Head Start program. Currently, Sheila works with the Maryland Minority Contractors Association utilizing her experience and knowledge to provide assistance to minority and women-owned businesses by taking an active role in the review of legislation and programs that affect their opportunities and well-being.

BUILDING A BETTER BALTIMORE: During her time as Mayor, Sheila moved Baltimore forward with urgency toward a cleaner, greener, safer, healthier City. Basic City services were delivered reliably – trash was picked up, roads were paved, police responded to calls, permits were issued, 311 functioned, water was safe to drink and bills were correct, streets were cleaner, senior facilities were safe and programmed, pools were open. Residents knew the police officers in their districts and there was more trust in our communities.

Sheila had a proven record of being deeply engaged in community policing, getting illegal guns off the street, and convening federal, state, and local agencies to leverage resources to get the most violent offenders off the street. She empowered our police to effectively do their job in a way that benefited and protected communities. These strategies led to 30-year record lows in crime and homicides.

Sheila launched a gun offender registry, the single stream recycling program, and the popular Downtown Circulator. She initiated the 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness, Cleaner Greener Baltimore, Fit Baltimore, PEACE Baltimore, and the Neighborhood Ambassador program. She was an active member of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Mayors Against Illegal Guns and a national leader in combating homelessness.

Sheila has been a strong advocate for treating public health issues, including HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, and lead poisoning in children. She is an avid athlete with a rigorous weekly fitness routine. Beyond her concern for her personal health and fitness, Sheila is an advocate for programs that improve children's health through a more nutritional diet and exercise routine.

Action, Accountability, and Excellence are what the people of Baltimore deserve from their Mayor. And that is what Sheila Dixon will deliver.
