Info | Wendy Bisaro was elected to the 16th Legislative Assembly on October 1, 2007 as the Member for Frame Lake in Yellowknife.
Ms. Bisaro was born and raised in Montreal, Québec. She attended McGill University and graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree in 1968, specializing in physical education. She taught high school in Montreal for several years before venturing north to Yellowknife in 1971. During that first year at Sir John Franklin High School, Ms. Bisaro fell in love with the north and decided to begin the next stage of her life in the land of the midnight sun. Teaching and mothering occupied the next 15 years of her life. Her son Perry returned to Yellowknife recently to begin his career after graduating from university.
In 1985, Ms. Bisaro entered the travel industry and worked at Mack Travel until 2004 when the agency closed its doors. She worked with Canadian North Airlines teaching, but this time teaching adults in the airline industry instead of teaching children in a gymnasium.
Over the years, Ms. Bisaro invested a significant amount of time in professional development. She has taken many courses, attended countless conferences and workshops, and learned something at every one of them. She has performed a wide range of jobs – from entry-level work to managing an office, from being a ‘newbie’ to mentoring ‘newbies’.
Ms. Bisaro became an active member of the Yellowknife community from day one. She was involved as a player, coach, and organizer for the Yellowknife Basketball Association and the Yellowknife Ladies Softball Association for many years and was a member of the group that founded Sport North.
In 1984, Ms. Bisaro moved from attending Sport North meetings to running them, spending four years as vice-president of the organization. She participated in the Arctic Winter Games as an athlete, in the Canada Games as an athlete, coach, and mission staff, was the NWT Chef de Mission for the 1984 Arctic Winter Games, and a director on the board of the 1988 Arctic Winter Games Host Society. That love of the Arctic Winter Games continues to this day and is evident by Ms. Bisaro’s most recent volunteer position: vice president of the 2008 Arctic Winter Games Host Society.
The political bug bit Ms. Bisaro in 1988 when she was elected to the Board of Trustees for Yellowknife Education District #1. She was a board member for the next twelve years (re-elected three times) and acted as Board Chair for those years.
In 2000, Ms. Bisaro decided to move to municipal politics and was elected to Yellowknife City Council for two consecutive three-year terms, chosen to be Deputy Mayor by her fellow council members during her second term.
