Info | Born in Columbia, South Carolina and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Graduated with a B.A. in sociology from the University of Michigan in 1961. She was elected to the Peoria School Board and served as board president from 1972-1973. She was also a board member of the Peoria Public Library Board and was a member of the Eureka College Board of Trustee's serving as president of that board in 1980 and 1982. She received her J.D. in law from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1984. Served as law clerk under U.S. District Judge Michael Mihm from 1984-1986. She was named Outstanding Alumnus of the University of Illinois College of Law in 2000. She is the first African-American woman to be elected to the Appellate Court outside Cook County.
