InfoLyle was born at Pense, Sask, and was raised in that community on the family farm. Lyle has been active serving local government throughout the years. He is a former Board of Education trustee and prior to his election, a municipal councillor. Lyle maintains his interest as a cattleman through the Saskatchewan Stockgrowers Association and served his community interests as the former chairperson of the Pense Rink Fundraising Committee.

Lyle, an original member of the Saskatchewan Party, was first elected to represent the constituency of Thunder Creek on September 16, 1999. Re-elected in 2003 and 2007, he is currently Minister of Enterprise and Innovation.

Lyle continues to farm and ranch on the Stewart family farm with his wife, Linda. They have three grown children: Stephanie, Alison, and Lee.
