Info | BATES, Joseph Bengal, a Representative from Kentucky; born in Republican, Ky., October 29, 1893; attended the public schools and the Mountain Training School at Hindman, Ky.; was graduated from Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College at Richmond in 1916; studied law; taught in the rural schools of Knott County, Ky., 1912-1915; high school superintendent at Raceland, Ky., 1917-1919; county clerk of Greenup County, Ky., 1922-1938; elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fifth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Fred M. Vinson; reelected to the Seventy-sixth and to the six succeeding Congresses and served from June 4, 1938, to January 3, 1953; unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1952, and was unsuccessful for the Democratic nomination in 1956 for the United States Senate; engaged in the practice of law and was a resident of Greenup, Ky.; died in Ashland, Ky., September 10, 1965; interment in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens, Flatwoods, Ky.
