Info | CLEMENS, Sherrard, a Representative from Virginia; born in Wheeling, Va. (now West Virginia), on April 28, 1820; appointed a cadet to the United States Military Academy at West Point, but resigned after six months; was graduated in law from Washington (now Washington and Jefferson) College, Washington, Pa.; was admitted to the bar in 1843 and commenced practice in Wheeling; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of George W. Thompson and served from December 6, 1852, to March 3, 1853; elected to the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses (March 4, 1857-March 3, 1861); was not a candidate for renomination in 1860; member, State convention, 1861; resumed the practice of law in Wheeling, W.Va.; moved to St. Louis, Mo., and continued the practice of law; died in St. Louis, Mo., June 30, 1881; interment in Calvary Cemetery.
