Info | James Lynnwood Bentley was a former Comptroller General of the USA State of Georgia. He served in that capacity from 1963-1971. Originally a Democrat, Bently switched to the Republican Party in 1968 and unsuccessfully sought the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 1970. He was defeated by more liberal candidate, Hal Suit, an Atlanta news broadcaster, who in turn lost the general election to Democrat Jimmy Carter.
Bentley was born in Upson County, Georgia. He was closely associated with U.S. Senator Herman Talmadge in state politics.
